Project Name: South Florida Coastal Marine Ecology
Start/End Dates: Oct. 1, 2003-????
Geographic Location: Florida Bay, Everglades National Park
Statement of Problem: Hypersaline conditions, seagrass die-off and the advent of extensive and persistent algal blooms drew attention to Florida Bay and its problems and resulted in calls for the responsible land management agencies to restore and preserve the Florida Bay ecosystem. An interagency working group was formed and developed a science plan for Florida Bay that outlined research and organizational needs for providing a science-based understanding of the bay to aid in management’s decision making process. This project covers the involvement of USGS/Biological Resources Division in the Interagency Florida Bay and Adjacent Waters Research Program.
Objectives: Develop and implement critical research needed to restore Florida Bay and adjacent waters.
Tasks:
Task 1 - Florida Bay and Adjacent Waters Research Program
Task 2 - Salinity Pattern in Florida Bay: A Synthesis
Task 3 - Temporal and Spatial Variation in Seagrass-Associated Fish and Invertebrates in South Florida
Task 4 - MAP long-term seagrass community monitoring
