Title: Habitat Data for Tampa Bay, Florida, USA, in 1952
Geospatial Data Presentation Form: raster digital data
Description:
Abstract:
This data set consists of digital raster data describing wetland and upland habitats in Tampa Bay, Florida, in 1952. The data set includes 21 7.5 quadrangles and contains a modified classification system. The data were generated from raster data obtained from FMRI. The Tampa Bay 52-82 data were given to Ken Handsa at the Stennis Space Center to convert into ELAS (image processing software developed by NASA). A crosswalk was conducted, changing from the Cowardin Classification system to 22 categories and to do the crosswalk, using the original NWRC raster data.
Purpose: The intended use of this data set is to provide historical information for comparison to monitor wetland trends over time.
Supplemental Information:
Through a cooperative study, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the Florida Department of Natural Resources (FDNR) estimated habitat changes in the Tampa Bay area from the 1950's to 1982. The data, housed in digital form on the DNR Marine Resource Geographic Information System (MRGIS) are photointerpreted aerial photographs that have been computer digitized in a 1:24,000 scale using the National Wetlands Inventory standard classification system. Over 600 separate categories are detailed in this hierarchical classification for the Tampa Bay region. Two 7.5-minute USGS topographic quadrangles have been interpreted and digitized into the MRGIS in addition to the data developed in conjunction with USFWS. The data have been synthesized on the MRGIS into general categories. For more information, refer to NWRC Open File Report 86-6, September 1986: Data Bases for use in Fish and Wildlife Mitigation in Tampa Bay Florida: Project Summary.

Access Constraints:
It is strongly recommended that these data are directly acquired from the distributor described above or from another USGS Biological Resources Division server and not indirectly through other sources which may have changed the data in some way. The distributor makes no claims as to the data's suitability for other purposes.
Use Constraints:
Acknowledgement of the National Wetlands Research Center as a data source would be appreciated in products developed from these data, and such acknowledgment as is standard for citation and legal practices for data source is expected by users of this data. Sharing new data layers developed directly from these data would also be appreciated by NWRC staff. Users should be aware that comparison with other data sets for the same area from other time periods may be inaccurate due to inconsistencies resulting from changes in mapping conventions, data collection, and computer processes over time. The distributor shall not be liable for improper or incorrect use of this data, based on the description of appropriate/inappropriate uses described in this metadata document. These data are not legal documents and are not to be used as such.
