Table of Contents - Is located on the left side of the map display. It shows the list of map layers available for displaying. To add more data layes to the table of contents, select from add more data drop-down list. Several layers are scale-dependent, which means that they will be listed in the drop-down list only if the map scale is within a certain range. Note that the order in which layers are listed cannot be changed. Images are positioned on the bottom of the list. The visibility of a layer can be turned on/off by checking check boxes. Vector layers can be made active. By setting the active layer, you tell the system which data set must be used for actions like querying, selecting, or identifying map features. A layer is made active by selecting boxes (in the example the soils layer is the active one). When you modify the visibility status of a layer, you need to click on the Update Map button in order to apply the change on the map. By clicking the ? located on the right of each layer name, you will retrieve and display more detailed information about layers, including the downloading sites of data and metadata files.

Map Legend - The Legend button in the IMS tool bar allows you to open a new window showing the map legend. A legend tells a map reader which is the symbol used to represent features on the map mean. A legend also shows symbols and labels containing explanatory text. Only visible layers are represented in a map legend. The layer order in the legend is consistent with the one in the table of contents.
To display the legend of some raster layers, click on the green "L" beside the layer's name.
